Hurry - Limited CSA Farm Shares Available
Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 02:49PM
Did you know that 2 full acres destroyed every minute? This, according to The Progressive Farmer magazine.
Shocking, really.
As a result, most farmers today are considered "part time" because they are forced to take "real" jobs to support their families.
(Okay, wet blankets! Isn't this supposed to be a fun newsletter? Sheesh!)
Well - with you - we're happy to play a role in reversing these trends. The best part? You'll eat well all summer long at the same time.
We're pleased to announce that we'll be one of two pick-up locations for Nu-Beginning Farm's CSA program this summer.
If you are unfamiliar with Community Supported Agriculture model, (or "CSA" for short), it works kind of like a Farmer's Market but you pick up a regular box of goodies at one central location, such as our grocery. Never joined a CSA? Here are some tips along with more reasons CSAs are so valuable and convenient.
Pay once and bi-weekly over 12 weeks you'll pick up :
- Fresh, local, chemical-free produce (some of it heirloom seed)
- Fruit from the Valley and greater region
- Cage-free eggs*
- ... and assorted seasonal surprises
Each box will have approximately $40 worth of produce, fruit, and eggs. Specific dietary requests can be accommodated.
(*Bonus! Most CSAs charge separately for eggs and do not include fruit. Both are included in Nu-Beginning Farm's CSA.)
John Mathney of Nu-Beginning Farms has teamed with area farmers to provide a diverse box on every pick-up. You may already know John from his leadership with the Staunton/Augusta Farmer's Market.
At the time of this writing 3 of the 15 boxes are reserved by other George Bowers Grocery customers. We encourage you to reserve your share now to avoid disappointment. Questions? Call John directly: 540-337-3867.

So, there you have it: great food, great convenience, all while supporting farmers doing great things. What's not to like?
P.S. Slide into Spring!
This Saturday kicks off the Staunton/Augusta Farmers Market. To celebrate, we're serving up mini "sliders" — and no, not just ho-hum burgers! These are locally-raised bison burgers from T&E Meats topped with Point Reyes blue cheese.
Let the fun begin!
