Turkey, Beer, Comfort Food - Choose 2

There is an expression that you can do anything quickly, cheaply, or correctly. The catch? You can only choose two.

Lucky you, there are three news bits below, and you can choose all three!

1 - Order Your Polyface Thanksgiving Turkeys

The deadline to order your Polyface turkey is November 1st. The price is $4.99/lb. Choose from two sizes: 10-15 lb, or 15-20 lb. A downpayment of 50% is required. Stop in, or call Brian to reserve: 540-255-6811.

2 - Hot Meals for Cold Weather

Take the night off from cooking! Enjoy homestyle comfort foods made with local ingredients. We're introducing a subscription pick-up starting Friday nights very soon. We're finalizing details. The to-go meals will be just one more way to relax Friday night...

3 - NOVA BrewFest

Join us - virtually - as we attend the Northern Virginia Brewfest this weekend (Saturday, October 23). We'll be representing Staunton and several of our fellow independent businesses. We'll be posting updates, photos, and video live during the event to Twitter. Search #novabrew to find us in real time or after the event.

And remember, we're expanding our selection of chilled craft beer here at George Bowers!

Not one, but two new businesses are the talk here at the grocery! You've probably already enjoyed a meal at Mockingbird. If not, do so soon! We're so excited Mockingbird will be bringing more live music to town. We admire such an ambitious project and know it will enjoy much success.

Looking for that something special for your house? Look no further than our new neighbor, Junk and Disorderly. Libby has sourced some fine and eclectic English antiques, furniture, and collectibles. It's lovely.

JUST FOOD - BRIEF BOOK REVIEW

Recommended Reading

"Food for thought" for those of you who enjoy discussing books with us....

Just Food by James E. McWilliams is a provocative read because it explores the validity of the "eat local" philosophy....so you'd think we'd hate this book, right? After all, isn't the entire point of George Bowers Grocery to economically support local farmers and other small food producers?

As it happens, Just Food presents some compelling arguments against the assumption that local is always best. It's a fair book that looks at conventional, local, and organic food production with a critical eye. It will expand your ideas about what food choices are most "just" for people, animals, and the planet. If read with an open mind you might rethink some beliefs about food... and be ever more pleased to shop with us.

Copies available here at the grocery, or, at The Sacred Circle.

Do You Possess the Traits of a Virginia Gentleman?

Who is Shadwell Culpepper?

Shadwell Culpepper: an exit on the way to Charlottesville, or a genteel man of manners? You decide. We like to imagine Mister S. Culpepper enjoying a refined, yet casual meal using our brand new, Virginia-made "Virginia Gentleman" brand steak sauce, barbecue sauce, or hot Chipotle sauce. (Yes, the one that looks like a bourbon bottle).

Mister Shadwell Culpepper approvesOr, come in and discover another Virginia-made summer barbecue sauce recently featured in The New York Times. Mr. Culpepper will be impressed with your refined choice.
