George Bowers Grocery is committed to small actions for big environmental results — some of which were available in 1881 and others that are brand new:

Inventory

  1. Our produce, meat, cheese, honey, and other foods are grown locally or sourced through a local/regional distributor. (See: Our Local Producers)
  2. Our refrigeration section is largely sourced locally, or produced in-house.
  3. Of our imported "fancy groceries", we bundle shipping in the most responsible fashion.

Operations

  1. No plastic bags! We offer paper bags and encourage you to use your own.
  2. You receive an automatic 10% discount on your entire purchase when you use our branded canvas bag.
  3. Our "to-go" meal boxes are made of recycled paper and sourced locally.
  4. Our napkins are unbleached and contain recycled paper.
  5. Bulk groceries are packaged in biodegradable, cellulose bags.
  6. We recycle glass, plastic, and aluminum.
  7. All lightbulbs are high-energy bulbs.
  8. We've added green plants for improved indoor air quality.

Bonus

  1. Many of you can easily walk or ride your bike here!

We applaud other local businesses who are Virginia Green certified. Some of them include: Darjeeling Tea Cafe, Cranberrys Grocery & Eatery, Staunton Grocery, Belle Grae Inn. We look forward to expanding our efforts, too.
